Kansas Ethanol selects Whitefox ICE membrane dehydration system

UK-headed membrane technology specialists Whitefox Technologies Ltd has announced that US ethanol producer Kansas Ethanol LLC has elected to install Whitefox ICE membrane dehydration system at its 77 million (US) gallons (≈ 291 million litre) per year plant in Lyons, Kansas (KS). For Whitefox Technologies the installation is the ninth in the United States bringing its installed membrane capacity to over 100 million gallons (≈ 378.5 million litres).

Founded in 2008, Kansas Ethanol LLC operates a 77 million (US) gallons (≈ 291.4 million litre) per year ethanol plant in Lyons, Kansas (photo courtesy Whitefox Technologies).

Founded in 2008, Kansas Ethanol LLC is an independently-owned single ethanol plant. The plant is an ICM designed facility with a 55 million gallon (208 million litre) nameplate capacity currently running at a 77 million gallons (≈ 291 million litre) production rate, using both milo and corn as feedstocks.

We are first and foremost pursuing avenues to reduce our operating costs and ways to lower our carbon intensity to capitalize on low-carbon fuel markets. We also want to improve our overall operations and debottleneck existing process units. After meeting with the team at Whitefox Technologies, we knew their system and team was the right one for us. We look forward to getting the system installed and running, said Mike Chisam, President, and CEO of Kansas Ethanol.

Established in 2000, Whitefox specializes in technology development and process integration based on its proprietary membrane solutions. Whitefox’s Integrated Cartridge Efficiency (Whitefox ICE) is a membrane-based dehydration technology with a small footprint.

Its efficient designs help reduce operation & maintenance costs by simplifying production and improve carbon intensity (CI) scores by reducing energy and water consumption in ethanol and organic chemical manufacturing processes.

Kansas Ethanol is already an efficient and well-managed plant. The addition of Whitefox ICE will further improve their overall efficiency in operations by eliminating recycle streams and fluctuations in distillation and dehydration. Whitefox ICE will enable Kansas Ethanol to increase production by an average rate of 30 000 gallons. This increase and the operational improvements will keep them highly competitive in low-carbon markets and have a positive impact on their bottom line, said Stephan Blum, CTO at Whitefox Technologies.

Kansas is home to 12 ethanol plants and the state produces nearly 500 million gallons (≈ 1.89 billion litres) per year of renewable, clean-burning ethanol fuel.

It’s great to be working with the team at Kansas Ethanol to further improve their energy and operational efficiency. It will be our first plant in this important state and our ninth ICE solution. This takes us to over 100 million gallons of installed membrane capacity, which is an exciting milestone, said Gillian Harrison, CEO of Whitefox Technologies.
