KNOT takes delivery of second LNG-fuelled shuttle tanker
With a gross tonnage of 85 504, the "Sindre Knutsen" is the most recent addition to Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT) fleet and its second dual-fuel shuttle tanker (photo courtesy NYK Line).

Norway-headed Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers AS (KNOT), a joint venture company between TS Shipping Invest AS (TSSI), the parent company of the Knutsen Group, and Japan-headed Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has taken delivery of a second shuttle tanker.

Named “Sindre Knutsen”, it is the second dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) shuttle tanker ordered by KNOT and it was delivered on August 30, 2022, at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd (DSME) in South Korea.

Like its sister ship “Frida Knutsen”, which was delivered last month, “Sindre Knutsen” too is a dual-fuel shuttle tanker that can use both heavy fuel oil (HFO) and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The vessel will use LNG as the primary fuel, which is more environmentally friendly than conventional HFO. It is equipped with a volatile organic compounds (VOC) recovery system and an energy storage system, thereby reducing overall operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The former system captures VOCs from HFO while the latter controls and optimizes the flexibility of the shaft generator power to improve engine responsiveness. This reduces fuel consumption by increasing operational flexibility and reducing the frequency with which auxiliary equipment is required.

As the system also works with the battery system, excess power from the shaft generator is used to recharge the battery.

As with “Frida Knutsen”, “Sindre Knutsen” will be chartered to ENI Trade & Biofuels S.p.A, a subsidiary of Italian oil, gas, and energy major Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi S.p.A. (ENI), and will be engaged in oil transportation in the North Sea and the Barents Sea.
