Gasum acquires Swedish Biogas International
Gasum Oy has announced that it has acquired Swedish Biogas International. The deal makes Gasum one of the largest producers and suppliers of biogas in the Nordics with 12 facilities in Finland and Sweden producing ≈ 650 GWh of biogas per annum.
Finland’s leading gas major Gasum Oy has announced that it has acquired Swedish Biogas International, a Swedish biogas producer and supplier in a bid to increase its supply biogas for industrial and transport use in the Nordic countries. The deal makes Gasum one of the largest producers and suppliers of biogas in the Nordics with an annual production capacity ≈ 650 GWh of biogas.
– The acquisition of Swedish Biogas International is an integral part of our strategy. Our aim is to actively develop the Nordic gas ecosystem, in which an important role is played by biogas. This transaction makes us even better able to offer competitive biogas for transport and industrial use, said Johanna Lamminen, CEO of Gasum in a statement.
Twelve biogas plants
Gasum is Finland’s leading gas player, processor of biodegradable waste and supplier of biogas. Gasum’s natural gas pipeline network is located in Southern Finland. Natural gas covers around 8 percent of Finland’s energy consumption. In Finland Gasum processes an annual total of 450 000 tonnes of waste and produces an annual total of around 350 GWh of biogas at its seven biogas plants located in Huittinen, Honkajoki, Kuopio, Oulu, Riihimäki, Turku and Vehmaa.
Gasum also produces biogas with its partners in Espoo, Kouvola and Lahti. The Gasum subsidiary Skangas is the leading Nordic expert in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and has LNG production plants in Risavika, Norway, and Porvoo, Finland, and LNG terminals in Øra, Norway, Lysekil, Sweden, and Pori, Finland.
In the transaction, five Swedish biogas plants in located in Jordberga, Katrineholm, Lidköping and Örebro as well as a majority shareholding in a production plant located in Västerås, Sweden, was transferred to Gasum’s ownership. Swedish Biogas International also has a 50 percent shareholding in Vadsbo Biogas.
Swedish Biogas International is one of the biggest producers of biogas in Sweden, producing an annual total of around 300 GWh of biogas. The first production plant of Swedish Biogas International was founded in 2009, and the company currently has 35 direct employees. The company’s head office is located in Linköping.
