Finland-headed forest industry and energy technology provider Valmet Oyj has announced that it will supply a long-term Performance Agreement and a board machine rebuild to Metsä Board Husum in Sweden, part of Finland-headed forest industry major Metsä Group. The main goal is to increase board machine (BM) 1’s Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) and annual folding boxboard (FBB) capacity by 200 000 tonnes.

Valmet delivered BM 1 to Metsä Board in 2016. The start-up of the rebuilt BM 1 is scheduled to take place in the fall of 2023. The value of the order will not be disclosed.
Metsä Board is responding to the growing demand for sustainably produced packaging materials that support the circular economy.
Currently, the annual FBB capacity of BM 1 is 400 000 tonnes. After the start-up of the rebuilt BM 1, scheduled to take place in the fall of 2023, FBB production capacity at Metsä Board Husum will increase to 600 000 tonnes.
We were looking for one reliable partner who could deliver this extensive project from stock preparation to winders and additionally support our long-term efficiency improvement efforts. We also demanded quite low CO2 emission levels for the size drying as well as highly automated parent roll logistics. Valmet was able to meet all of these requirements, said Ari Kiviranta, SVP Technology, Metsä Board.
Although the value of the order has not been disclosed, Valmet says that the total value of an order of this type and delivery scope is typically around EUR 70–80 million.
At Valmet, we are extremely happy to continue this deep collaboration with Metsä Board to develop the Husum Mill further. Our long and trustworthy cooperation with both the customer and the mill has played a key role in this journey, said Mikko Tani, AVP Sales and Marketing, Valmet.
