Swedish climate-tech company Nordbex AB and Norway-headed pure-play carbon capture company Aker Carbon Capture AS have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to develop a portfolio of future bioenergy with carbon capture, use, and storage (BECCUS) plants across Europe.
Under the MoU, the companies will combine their technology, competency, and capabilities to realize Nordbex 1, Sweden’s first replicable BECCUS facility.
Scheduled for deployment in the SE4 electricity region by the first half of 2029, the facility will convert forestry waste into electricity and heat for local communities while efficiently capturing biogenic carbon dioxide (bioCO2).
Aker Solutions will provide project management, owner’s engineering, and EPCm services, whilst Nordbex will lead as project developer.
We’re proud to team up with Aker Solutions to deliver a new generation of Bio-CCUS plants. While Bio-CCUS has been a recognized method for removing carbon from the atmosphere for decades, Nordbex’s unique business model of building plants that are replicable, bankable, and optimized for high-quality carbon removal to ensure maximum climate impact, said Carl Berglund, Co-founder and CCO of Nordbex.
Next phase of collaboration
The collaboration between Aker Solutions and Nordbex began in 2023, when Aker Solutions’ consultancy arm, Entr, was awarded a contract to carry out engineering studies for Nordbex 1, examining the integration of standalone technologies.
Nordbex’s vision of delivering dispatchable baseload electricity and heat while safely removing CO2 from the atmosphere resonates perfectly with Aker Solutions’ drive towards sustainable and innovative energy solutions, said Henrik Inadomi, EVP of New Energies at Aker Solutions.
The MoU marks the next phase of the collaboration, paving the way for future joint initiatives.
We’re excited to support Nordbex in delivering robust, future-ready Bio-CCUS plants and in shaping the global decarbonization agenda, Henrik Inadomi said.
The MoU grants Aker Solutions exclusivity on future Bio-CCUS plants 2 and 3 developed by Nordbex, with a first right of offer on subsequent projects.
Aker Solutions’ capable organization, their extensive experience within complex and large-scale project execution, including their unmatched track record in the CCUS sphere, will help accelerate our vision of climate-positive energy infrastructure and delivering net-negative CO2 emissions, concluded Carl Berglund.
