The Netherlands-headed GoodFuels, part of GoodNRG Group, a leading biofuels pioneer in the global transport industry, has announced that Norwegian Cruise Line’s "Norwegian Dawn" cruise vessel bunkered a GoodFuels B30 sustainable biofuel blend while docked at the IJmuiden Cruise Terminal in the Netherlands.
Supplied by FincoEnergies in partnership with KPI OceanConnect, this biofuel adoption marks an important step toward decarbonizing the cruise line’s operations.
The B30 biofuel blend, produced exclusively from feedstocks certified as 100 percent waste and residues, offers a sustainable alternative to conventional fossil marine fuels.
Reduction of carbon- and local air pollutants
According to GoodFuels, by choosing its sustainable biofuel, Norwegian Dawn can achieve up to 80-90 percent reduction in lifecycle carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions compared to traditional marine diesel—while requiring no engine modifications to realize these benefits.
Beyond reducing fossil CO2 emissions, biofuels contribute to better air quality along cruise routes.
For vessels like Norwegian Dawn, this means fewer local pollutants such as sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), and black carbon, benefiting the environment and communities near these waters.
We’re excited to support Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in their move toward cleaner cruising. By choosing sustainable biofuels, they’re driving down emissions and setting a strong example for the cruise industry, said Mayu Kubo, Commercial Manager of Marine Biofuels at FincoEnergies.
Aligned with climate ambitions
This initiative aligns with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ‘Sail and Sustain’ program, which advocates for the use of renewable fuels across 40 percent of its fleet.
For GoodFuels, each biofuel delivery reaffirms our commitment to making an impact with maritime partners with practical, available, and affordable decarbonization solutions. Our partnership with KPI OceanConnect on this project reflects a shared vision of sustainable biofuels as a viable path to reducing emissions in marine travel, said GoodFuels in a statement.
As more cruise operators turn to sustainable fuels, GoodFuels says that it is “committed to backing this shift and helping pave the way for cleaner cruising and healthier marine environments.”
Sustainable biofuels are an effective solution for decarbonizing global shipping as they are “drop-in” for existing marine engines without changes to the engine or fuel infrastructure.
This means shipowners can start reducing CO2 emissions today without having to invest heavily in new vessels or in retrofitting their current fleet.
