India's largest integrated power utility National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) and Chempolis India, a Fortum group associate Co & a leading Finnish biorefining technology provider, have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the feasibility of setting up a bamboo based biorefinery in Bongaigaon, Assam.

Through this MoU, Chempolis india will work with NTPC to conduct the feasibility study for the project which shall utilize bamboo for the production of 2G ethanol & other value-added products.

It is a great recognition of our technological capabilities to get the possibility to partner with an Indian enterprise in an already second industrial-size biorefinery project in Assam India. We are looking forward to converting the abundantly available feedstock bamboo to ethanol and other valuable outputs like sulfur-free lignin, furfural, and acetic acid. The refinery will reduce carbon emissions and create welfare for a significant number of families in the region. India is Chempolis home market, said Markus Alholm, President and CEO, Chempolis.
