A decision by the Investment Fund Sustainable Economy North-Holland (PDENH) and ENGIE Nederland to become partners represents one of the last steps towards the creation of Ambigo, a unique and innovative biomass gasification plant in Alkmaar, Netherlands.
Research and demo facility
Ambigo is an industrial-scale research and demonstration facility in which three innovative Dutch technologies invented by the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) are being combined for the first time ever into an industrial process for producing green gas.
Together the three technologies; MILENA, OLGA, and ESME will ensure that different types of biomass can be converted very efficiently into green gas in the installation.
PDENH and ENGIE Nederland join existing project partners ECN, Gasunie New Energy, a technology development subsidiary of N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie, which provides gas transmission in the Netherlands and northern Germany, and Royal Dahlman, a global supplier of specialized filtration system technology for the petrochemical and chemical industry and high-tech components for gas turbines.
Energy Innovation Park
Ambigo will be based at Alkmaar’s Energy Innovation Park and will be the first company to use the facilities of InVesta, a centre of expertise for biomass gasification and green gas.
Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and, from 2018, the research and demonstration facility can be used to convert residual flows of biomass, such as waste wood, into green gas.
InVesta provides assistance to organizations and companies carrying out practical research into biomass gasification technology. It is Alkmaar’s aim to develop into an international expertise hub on this site.
