Firefighters tackle Scottish pellet silo fire
In the UK, firefighters from around the Highlands are still being deployed to tackle a pellet storage silo fire at the Balcas Invergordon production facility in Scotland. No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire that broke out earlier in the week.
Commissioned in 2008, the Invergordon site consists of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant and a 100 000 tonne-per-annum wood pellet plant. According to social media reports from Invergordon Fire Station, the affected storage silo contained around 14 000 tonnes of pellets. Fire crews are in the slow process of emptying the silo “damping are down as and when required”.
According to local newspaper The Press and Journal, shift staff at the pellet plant called emergency services November 19 when smoke was spotted emerging from on of the two storage silos.
All staff were safely evacuated and the entire plant including the CHP were shut down. The storage silos are located separately from the pellet production plant, which can operate independently.
