Dutch biomass-to-methanol developer Perpetual Next has announced that it has selected international industrial services provider Bilfinger Group as Owner’s Engineer for the further development of its DeltaTorr and DeltaNor projects in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The appointment marks an important milestone in the development of a large-scale biomethanol production facility, as Perpetual Next works towards a Final Investment Decision (FID).
The Delfzijl project is an important part of Perpetual Next’s ambition to develop large-scale production of biomethanol from biomass residues.
By converting sustainable biogenic residues into biomethanol, the project aims to provide a lower-carbon alternative for multiple industries like the maritime sector and the chemical industry.
As Owner’s Engineer, Bilfinger will support Perpetual Next throughout the next stage of project development.
The collaboration will help bring together the various project partners and disciplines, while further advancing the project towards a Final Investment Decision (FID).

Domestic production
The project represents a significant potential investment in the region, with total capital expenditure for the full development envisaged at up to EUR 1 billion.
The facility’s development would strengthen the Netherlands’ and Europe’s position in the growing market for sustainable fuels and the emerging biomethanol economy.
As methanol becomes an increasingly important sustainable fuel and key building block for the chemical industry, domestic production will play an important role in strengthening supply security and strategic autonomy.
Perpetual Next and Bilfinger Group will now work together with the project’s other partners and stakeholders to progress the development towards the next phase and ultimately towards a Final Investment Decision.
