Dutch biomethanol producer Perpetual Next and American equipment supplier TSI Inc. celebrate their long-term collaboration by kicking off construction of the world's largest torrefaction reactor in Estonia.
The reactor is an important part of Perpetual Next’s Biomethanol Blueprint, which is currently deployed at four Perpetual Next production sites in Europe and the United States.
This blueprint for large-scale biomethanol production with proven industrial technology enables rapid, serial replication at a commercial scale.
Developed in partnership with, among others, Air Liquide and Perpetual Next home engineer Fluor, each plant has an output of 220,000 tonnes of biomethanol per annum per production location.
Fuel for shipping
As part of the blueprint, TSI and Perpetual Next entered into an agreement in March 2024 for the production of eight large-scale torrefaction reactors, each with an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes of renewable carbon.
The renewable carbon is then converted into biomethanol via a gasification system and methanol synthesis. The biomethanol is then used as a raw material for chemicals and as a fuel for shipping.
TSI is honoured and excited to have been selected by Perpetual Next as its torrefaction technology supplier for biomethanol production. Perpetual Next’s innovation, determination, and pioneering spirit show us all an important example of how we can all benefit from the rapidly developing renewable carbon market, commented Benny Teal, CEO of TSI.
After the successful installation of a large TSI drying plant for pretreatment at the Perpetual Next production site in Estonia in 2020, TSI successfully commissioned a torrefaction reactor at its own production facility in Georgia (GA), the United States (US), in May 2025.
These technological milestones marked the prelude to the production of the largest torrefaction reactor in the world and confirm the deep technical and strategic collaboration between TSI and Perpetual Next. We’re looking forward to the next steps, concluded Rene Buwalda, CEO of Perpetual Next.
