Despite upcoming international forestry tradeshows such as Elmia Wood (Sweden), Interforst (Germany), and FinnMETKO (Finland), Ponsse opted to host the launch at a special event in Surahammar, Sweden, at the facilities of its Swedish subsidiary, Ponsse AB.
Held on May 27-28, 2022, “PONSSE Show Sweden” saw amongst other things the global launch of the PONSSE Scorpion Giant harvester and the PONSSE Mammoth forwarder that the company says “meet the highest requirements of modern forestry, both in terms of ergonomics and productivity.”
The new solutions have been developed together with Ponsse customers and with “great consideration for their needs.”
These new products strengthen our position as a leading global supplier of solutions for responsible logging. The goal of the development work of the two new products has been to improve ergonomics, safety, and usability, together with improved visibility from the cab. We believe we have succeeded very well in this and are delighted to be able to demonstrate these new products to our customers here today in Surahammar, said Marko Mattila, Sales, Marketing, and Service Manager at Ponsse.
Unique ergonomics
The Scorpion Giant incorporates many solutions that are familiar from the Scorpion harvester range and have now been further developed.
The cab’s ergonomics and function have been an important part of Ponsse’s research and development in recent years, together with the development of safety. A full windshield that goes all the way to the roof of the cab, gives the operator even better visibility and ensures safe work in all conditions.
Other features include increased traction and a more powerful C50+ crane whose fork boom provides excellent visibility of the felling site.
The Scorpion Giant also features the unique active leveling and stabilization system familiar to other Scorpion models. It is equipped with the state-of-the-art and advanced Opti 5G system and the Opti 8 touchscreen computer.
New H8 harvester head
Also launched was a new PONSSE H8 harvester head. The new H8 head features a powerful feed, a strong grip, and a stable, yet flexible frame. The area in the saw-box is wider, enabling better handling of the butt root flare.
The new H8 can be mounted on Ponsse’s Ergo, Bear, and new Scorpion Giant harvesters while the automatic functions of the Opti control system, developed and built by Ponsse, control the feed speed and the saw movements according to the diameter of the trees, ensuring fast and accurate bucking.
With Active Speed, the working speed of the head is adjusted based on the tree species and the diameter of the trunk.
Mammoth load capacity
The Mammoth can be fitted with a long rear frame extension which enables the transport of very large logs, for example in plantation forests in South America. It offers the highest productivity when driving distances are long. Fewer trips are then required, as more logs can be transported per trip.
The new forwarder is equipped with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) system and PONSSE K121 crane.
Together with the stable frame structure and powerful hydraulics, this ensures that large logs and heavy loads can be transported easily even in the most demanding terrain.
For increased operator comfort, the Mammoth can be equipped with the PONSSE Active Cabin, an efficient cabin damping system with a simple design. It helps operators to keep the work going even during long work shifts by reducing the impact on the cab.
In addition to the Mammoth, the Active Cabin is available for the Buffalo, Elephant, and Elephant King forwarders.
