In Sweden, oil refiner and renewable fuel producer Preem AB is planning a new facility at its Gothenburg refinery. The new unit is expected to produce approximately one million m3 of renewable diesel and renewable aviation fuel per annum which represents approximately 25 percent of Sweden's estimated need for renewable fuels in 2030. The company has now initiated the application process for new environmental permitting of the Gothenburg refinery with the relevant authorities and stakeholders.
According to the company, Preem’s long-term goal is to produce at least three million m3 of renewable fuels by 2030. The planned changes to the Gothenburg refinery include the addition of a new renewable fuel production plant – a so-called Green Feed Unit (GFU), which will have the capacity to produce approximately one million m3 of renewable diesel and renewable aviation fuel per annum.
Preem will also seek permission to install an electrolyzer to produce hydrogen from electricity. Other changes include, for example, extending the raw material base so that different types of renewable feedstock raw can be included.
Preem wishes to continue the transition to a sustainable society and increase the production of renewable fuels in Sweden. We have both the technology and the expertise to manage the transition to more sustainable fuels, said Petter Holland, CEO of Preem.
Currently, Preem’s renewable diesel fuel, Preem Evolution Diesel, is produced at the Gothenburg refinery. The facility has been developed in several stages and will be further adapted to increase capacity gradually. But in order to reach the target of three million m3, more investments are needed and an important part is the possibility of a new production unit.
In order to implement these changes, Preem has to apply for a new environmental permit with the authorities that will cover both the planned and existing activities. The first step in that process is to call for consultation, partly with authorities and partly with residents.
If all goes as planned, the new plant would be completed in 2023 at the earliest.
