REDcert2 certification available for chemical recycling

Sustainability certification scheme developer REDcert GmbH has announced that its REDcert2 solution for the certification of fossil-based recycled materials used in production processes and products made from them as well as sustainably produced biomass as input materials in a sustainable chemical value chain, is now available.

Coming out in the wash, plastic and aluminium foil reject from a paper mill that uses post-consumer recycled carton packing and paper as feedstock. The material is used on site as fuel for the process steam boiler.
Coming out in the wash, plastic and aluminum foil reject from a paper mill that uses post-consumer recycled carton packing and paper as feedstock. The material is used on-site as fuel for the process steam boiler, however, there is increasing interest from the chemical industry for “chemical recycling” of end-of-life plastics (ELP).

For the chemical industry, the consistent use of recycled waste is becoming increasingly important given the finite nature of fossil-based resources. A particular focus is the use of plastic waste.

As announced in September 2019, REDcert has broadened the concept of sustainability and supports chemical companies in creating incentives for the sustainable use of fossil waste materials and to significantly reduce the use of materials made from fossil primary raw materials.

With the expansion of the scope of the REDcert2 scheme to include the certification of sustainable material flows in the chemical industry, REDcert now offers a solution for the certification of fossil-based recycled materials used in production processes and products made from them as well as sustainably produced biomass as input materials in a sustainable chemical value chain.

The core aspect of REDcert2 certification is the successfully proven REDcert2 mass balance approach. Another new and practically oriented option is the extended mass balance, which enables companies to transfer properties of the same products from one location to another, regardless of whether the individual locations are physically connected or not.
