Reolum unveils third e-methanol plant plans

In Spain, Reolum Renovables SL (Reolum), a developer of renewable energy and power-to-X (PtX) projects, has announced its third PtX project in the Castile and León region — in Monfarracinos, Zamora.

Located in the Zamora Norte Industrial Park in Monfarracinos, Zamora, the new project will occupy a 26.8-hectare site, dedicated to the production of green e-methanol, a synthetic renewable fuel of non-biological origin (RFNBO) that will be key to the decarbonization of heavy transport, especially maritime and aviation.

Scheduled to begin construction in 2027, the EUR 700 million investment includes the design, construction, and operation of an integrated facility to produce e-methanol.

It comprises a bioenergy unit, which will require 120,000 tonnes per annum of unused agricultural biomass, a biogenic carbon dioxide (bioCO2) capture unit, and a green hydrogen unit.

The plant will transform around 200,000 tonnes per annum of bioCO2 into 140,000 tonnes of renewable e-methanol, and is expected to create approximately 1,500 jobs during peak construction phases and more than 200 direct jobs during operation.

The regional government supports all companies that want to grow, invest, or establish themselves in Castile and León, said Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, President of the Regional Government of Castile and León.

Mañueco reiterated that such planned projects require the Spanish government’s new energy plan to guarantee support, which is essential to boosting industrial development and employment in the region.

Our commitment to decarbonization, and specifically to Castile and León, remains unwavering, and developing our third project in the region is proof of this. Considering our three plants in the region, we will generate a total of 500 direct permanent jobs and 420,000 tonnes per year of green e-methanol, positioning Castile and León as the leading producer in Spain and Europe. We are taking another step in our strategic vision: the production of green e-methanol, as well as its logistics and marketing. We must remember that this is the ‘fuel of the future,’ that is, a basic industrial product, commented Yann Dumont, Founding Partner and CEO of Reolum.
