SaltX and Østfold Energi to pilot cool heat storage project

Sweden-headed energy storage technology developer, SaltX Technology Holding AB (SaltX) has announced that it has signed an agreement with the Norwegian municipal energy utility Østfold Energi AS regarding certain market- and distribution rights for its EnerStore energy storage solution. In addition, the Norwegian funding agency Enova SF has approved a NOK 1.8 million (≈ EUR 190 000) grant to conduct a pilot project that will be installed at one of Østfold Energi's clients during 2019.

In Sweden, SaltX Technology has developed a groundbreaking proprietary technology with which energy can be stored in salt, and subsequently recovered in the form of heat or cold. During 2018, SaltX and Norwegian energy utility Østfold Energi developed a concept and conducted a feasibility study in which full-scale tests were completed in September at a district heating unit in Åland, Finland.

We see an increasing demand for cooling among our district heating customers. SaltX Technology has an interesting and competitive solution that we want to try in our system. We believe the market for this kind of solution is significant, not only in the Nordics, but also globally, said Oddmund Kroken CEO of Østfold Energi.

SaltX will deliver the salt material and related components and Østfold Energi will, with the support of SaltX, install and run the pilot plant. The purpose of the project will be to showcase the technology and system for potential customers.

Enova SF, a funding agency owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment and charged with supporting the development of energy and climate technology will provide NOK 1.8 million (≈ EUR 190 000) grant to support the project.

Østfold Energi is a great example of true pioneers that believe in new technology and wants to lead the way. To fully commercialize the solution, we will together with Østfold Energi also involve a leading system partner, said Dr Christofer Rhén, Vice President of Business Development, SaltX.
