In Sweden, energy-as-a-service (EaaS) provider Adven Group and municipal energy distributor Trelleborgs Energi AB have hosted a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction of a new biomass-fired boiler unit at the Östervångsverket district heating plant.
Trelleborg is an expansive region, evident in the many ground and construction works underway in the municipality.
In the new Västra Sjöstaden development, Trelleborgs Energi is building a low-temperature district heating network, laying new district heating pipes from Östervångsverket to the upcoming Sjöstaden.
District heating is an important part of the transition, both now and in the future: it relieves our already strained electricity system and also forms a perfect basis for new energy solutions. The developed district heating production will be a step on the way to realizing the goal of net zero emissions in Trelleborg by 2040, said Melinda Frigyesi-Almström, Strategy Manager at Trelleborgs Energi.
Double baseload capacity
The new 15 MW plant will double the current baseload capacity on site at Östervångsverket. It will also be the single largest boiler in Trelleborg’s district heating network.
The new heating unit will run on renewable and recycled fuels, mainly wood waste. This material cannot be recycled in any other way and would otherwise have been landfilled.
The plant is also being built to handle more fuels such as liquid waste, providing additional flexibility and security in the energy supply.
The foundation for a new heating plant will soon be here. But what is being built here is also security. Security for residents who want to live here, for companies that want to establish themselves here, and for future generations who will live their lives in Trelleborg, said Bert Westerberg, Deputy Chairman of the Trelleborg Municipal Board.
Adven Sweden, which has owned and operated Östervångsverket since 2021, will invest around SEK 400 million (≈ EUR 36.1 million) in the project.

The new heat plant is scheduled to be commissioned in the fall of 2027 and be ready to deliver heat to the people of Trelleborg in time for the 2027/2028 heating season.
