Solvay Biomass Energy (SBE) has announced that it has halted all operations and torrefied wood pellet production at its Quitman, Mississippi plant. Effective immediately SBE cites that in the “context of persisting adverse market conditions” it is no longer able to operate profitably. Formed in 2014 as a joint venture (JV) between Solvay Energy Services and New Biomass Holding, the focus of the JV was on the development of torrefied wood pellets and industrial-scale production. According to SBE it has succeeded to produce high quality torrefied pellets, however the activity has faced a slow market development prompting a decision to idle the plant indefinitely.
