Scania, the Swedish truck, engine, and bus brand within Germany-headed Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH has announced that it has received an order for 160 gas-fuelled city buses from EMT Madrid, the municipal transport company for the Spanish capital Madrid.

The order is part of the complete bus renewal programme for EMT Madrid that will take delivery of 80 new buses this year with another 80 buses added to the fleet in 2018. This order is in addition to the 46 Scania gas buses ordered last year.

The City of Madrid has initiated an ambitious programme to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions with the stated goal to ban diesel by 2025. Half the EMT fleet of more than 1 500 buses is already gas powered and with the scheduled deliveries that share will be even higher.

– Thanks to lower carbon emissions and noise reduction, interest in gas-fuelled operations has surged worldwide. The Scania buses with the acclaimed Euro 6 gas engine is comparable in performance to a diesel engine. Therefore it is an increasingly popular option, especially among  European operators, said Anna Carmo e Silva, Head of Buses and Coaches at Scania in a statement.
