Segezha Group start pellet production at Sokol Timber in Vologda

Russia-based forest industry major Segezha Group, part of the joint-stock financial corporation Sistema JSFC, has announced that it has begun pellet production at its Sokol Integrated Woodworking Plant, part of the Sokol Timber Company JSC subsidiary in Sokol, Vologda region.

In Russia, Segezha Group has started up a 12 000 tonne-per-annum wood pellet plant at its Sokol Integrated Woodworking Plant in Sokol, Vologda region (photo courtesy Segezha Group).

According to a statement, the 12 000 tonne-per-annum pellet plant will use all dry wood waste and sawmill residues from the Sokol Integrated Woodworking Plant to produce pellets that are destined for Russian and European residential consumers.

The new facilities will allow us to develop a comprehensive approach to management of forest raw materials, and to provide for the waste disposal by such waste being reprocessed into biofuel granules and used to generate heat. This is a safe and environmentally friendly thing to do. The new fuel will help provide heating for the entire enterprise, said Konstantin Pastukhov, General Director of Sokol Integrated Woodworking Plant.

As previously announced, Segezha Group is also completing construction of another pellet production plant in Krasnoyarsk Krai, at the site of Lesosibirsky LDK No. 1 (Xylotech Sibir LLC). The total output volume in this project is 70 000 tonnes per annum and is expected to be commissioned in November 2018.

Biomass heat for Segezha PPM

Segezha Group has been working systemically on developing production of heating energy from renewable sources in all divisions of the company. In Karelia, as part of the third stage of modernization of Segezha PPM, the company plans to launch a multi-fuel boiler that uses biomass as fuel for production of process steam. The new boiler will use both wood waste and wastewater sludge as fuel.

In April 2018, during his working visit to Lesosibirsk President of Segezha Group Mikhail Shamolin said that production of biofuel is one of the most important directions in the company’s environmental protection and ecological policy. According to him, the Group holding is “interested in finding comprehensive solutions in the context of multiple reprocessing of raw materials.”
