In Sweden, municipal energy utility Söderenergi AB has announced that real-estate major Fabege has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to purchase carbon dioxide removal (CDR) certificates from Söderenergi's Igelsta biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Södertälje.
From 2030, Söderenergi plans to capture and permanently store up to 500,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide (bioCO2) annually.
The LoI for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) certificates is an important signal for Söderenergi and climate work in Greater Stockholm as well as for Fabege, which strives to be a driving force in the green transition.
The agreement is being implemented in connection with Söderenergi’s bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project that is scheduled to be operational in 2030.
We are pleased that the negative emissions from our facility at Igelsta will benefit Fabege and their operations in Greater Stockholm. The agreement shows confidence in our BECCS project and contributes to building the industry for negative emissions, commented Robert Tingvall, CEO of Söderenergi.
A collaborative effort
Fabege is one of Sweden’s largest real estate companies, and it has set high climate ambitions.
Sustainability work is a collaborative effort where actors throughout the value chain need to contribute to create real change and drive the development of a sustainable city.
The company has set a net-zero goal, and the certificates for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) are an important piece of the puzzle to reach this goal.
This is part of our long-term sustainability strategy, and we are pleased to be able to contribute to the creation of these types of technical solutions that are important for Sweden as a whole to reach the climate goals, said Mia Häggström, Sustainability Manager at Fabege.
FID in 2026
Söderenergi is currently working on the design of the carbon capture facility at Igelsta.
To reach a final investment decision (FID) by the end of 2026, the entire value chain must be in place: from carbon capture, through transport and geological storage, to a certified product for customers with ambitious climate goals.
The agreement with Fabege will be finalized pending the outcome of the FID.
