Neste supplies DHL Express with SAF at San Francisco International Airport

Finland-headed Neste Oyj, a leading provider of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has signed an agreement to supply SAF to DHL Express, the express service arm of Deutsche Post DHL Group, a leading global mail and logistics company. Through this agreement, Neste has commenced the supply of SAF with immediate effect to DHL Express at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in California (CA), the United States (US).

Earlier this year Neste established a continuous supply of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Neste’s “MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel” has been made available for all commercial, cargo, business, and private aviation operators at SFO, with commitments in place to use SAF from major commercial and business airlines.

Deutsche Post DHL Group is renowned as a pioneer of green logistics, utilizing its expertise to make the logistics of its customers’ greener and more sustainable.

This deal will see DHL Express become the first cargo operator to use Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel on flights departing from SFO and will enable DHL Express to contribute to its climate protection target to reduce all logistics-related emissions to zero by the year 2050.

Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Neste’s SAF is made from sustainably sourced, renewable waste, and residue raw materials. Typically, in its neat form and over the life cycle, its use can reduce up to 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel used as per the method used to calculate life cycle emissions and emission reduction comply with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC).

According to Neste, its SAF gives an immediate solution for reducing the direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of flying. It can be used as a drop-in fuel with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure, requiring no extra investment. Prior to use, the SAF is blended with fossil jet fuel and is then certified to meet ASTM jet fuel specifications.

Despite the difficult current situation, the aviation industry is showing increased commitment to investing in sustainable aviation fuel. The cargo aviation sector is essential for global business, generating growth and facilitating economic recovery. As the transportation of goods is an essential part of a strong economy, we need solutions that both enable its growth and reduce emissions immediately. Neste’s annual SAF production capacity is currently 100 000 tonnes (≈ 34 million US gallons). With Neste’s Singapore refinery expansion on the way, and with possible additional investment into the Rotterdam refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tonnes (≈ 515 million gallons) of SAF annually by 2023.

Neste is actively working with partners through the supply chain to grow the availability of SAF for the aviation industry globally. The fuel is already available, used in the market, and supplied to various commercial airlines, business aviation customers, and at various airports in Europe and North America.
