Sumitomo SHI FW to supply CFB boiler island for Daesan Biomass Power project

Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW), a subsidiary of Japan-headed Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd (SHI) has announced that it has been awarded a contract by Korea-headed Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd (HDEC) for design and supply of the boiler island for the Daesan Biomass Power Plant project in South Korea. Commercial operation of the new biomass CFB power plant is scheduled for the end of 2020.

Last April, South Korea-based CGN Daesan Power Co., Ltd revealed that it had selected Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for a 109 MWe biomass power plant to be built at Dokgot 2-ro, Daesan-eup, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do in South Korea.

According to SFW, it will design and supply the single circulating fluidized bed (CFB) steam generator and auxiliary equipment for the boiler island. The CFB boiler will be designed to burn wood pellets – to be supplied by Canadian producer Pinnacle – while meeting applicable environmental regulatory requirements.

We are proud to be such an integral part of South Korea’s energy solutions. Together with HDEC and our CFB technology, we will help to meet Korea’s energy needs in an environmentally sound manner, said Tomas Harju-Jeanty, CEO, SFW.

SFW has supplied over 30 CFB steam generators in South Korea. This is SFW’s third CFB boiler unit in South Korea firing biomass as its primary fuel – last month in SFW announced that it had been selected by GS Engineering and Construction Corp. (GS E&C) for the design and supply of the 100 MWe Dangjin Biomass No. 2 Power Plant Project Boiler Island.

SFW’s CFB biomass technology provides dependable, fuel-flexible energy on-demand which is a big advantage for a renewable energy source, said Weigang Chen, President, SFW Power Group Asia.
