In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center) and Etihad Airways PJSC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a research project to explore how municipal solid waste (MSW) can be converted into jet fuel to be used on Etihad Airways’ flights.

According to a Tadweer social media statement on October 16, Etihad Airways and Tadweer will explore the possibility of developing a long-term project with additional partners and will start with an initial feasibility study to develop a flagship waste-to-fuel facility in Abu Dhabi.
The project is anticipated to show environmental benefits in reducing the overall carbon footprint of the aviation sector while being cost competitive with conventional jet fuel production based on average oil prices.
This agreement is in line with our mandate to implement innovative and exceptional solutions that strengthen the best treatment methods for municipal solid waste. It also comes as part of our commitment to UAE National Agenda 2021 and Abu Dhabi Integrated Waste Management Master Plan 2040 aiming at the diversion of 75 percent of the municipal solid waste from landfills, said Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Acting General Manager, Tadweer.
