Thöni and BioEnergy Hawaii LLC are entering a project partnership for the delivery of a high solids anaerobic digestion facility and biogas upgrading for the “Integrated Resource Recovery Facility“ on Big Island of Hawaii.

Austria-based biogas technology provider Thöni has revelaed that it has entered into a project partnership with BioEnergy Hawaii LLC (BEH) for the delivery of a high solids anaerobic digestion (AD) facility and biogas upgrading for the “Integrated Resource Recovery Facility“ on Big Island of Hawaii. BioEnergy Hawaii, LLC (BEH) was formed in 2006 for the express purpose of establishing sustainable resource management operations in the State of Hawaii. BEH is committed to the development of waste-to-value facilities that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable for the long-term use and benefit of the residents and businesses across the Hawaiian Islands. The company is headquartered in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as well as corporate offices based in Newport Beach, California.
Divert MSW from landfill
The BEH project will accept municipal solid waste (MSW) delivered by local waste collection companies, and divert 70 percent of it from the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill. The project will include advanced recycling operations and produce multiple value products from the waste streams: recyclable commodities, organics, and residual solid fuel. Under the BEH approach, recyclables will be recovered and sent to the local recycling commodity market; organic waste will be treated through AD to produce fertiliser, compost and biogas; the solid materials—mixed papers, textiles, low-value plastics and wood—will be processed into a post-recycled engineered fuel.
Power and biomethane
The facility will be designed to process about 200 tons of incoming MSW per day with the potential for an expansion to double, to 400 tons per day. Recyclables, metals and plastics will be separated out and the remaining organic fraction will then go through Thöni digesters for biogas production. A share of the biogas will be used to power the facility, the remaining biogas will be upgraded to renewable natural gas and fed into the gas grid or compressed to produce transportation fuel.
