Sasol ecoFT is a newly formed business unit of the South Africa-headed integrated chemicals and energy major Sasol Ltd.
The project, which goes by the name SkyFuelH2, aims to establish a first-of-its-kind industrial-scale production facility in Långsele for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Sweden is at the forefront of the green and digital transformation of business and industry, which creates new jobs with decent conditions throughout Sweden. SkyFuelH2 is another example of how the change can create jobs and faith in the future, this is an important step for Långsele, Sollefteå, Sweden and our aviation industry, said Minister of Trade and Industry Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson.
In this collaboration with Sasol ecoFT, a world leader in Fischer-Tropsch technology, the SkyFuelH2 project aims to produce SAF by combining carbon derived from biomass and renewable hydrogen from the electrolysis of water.
The electricity used to produce the hydrogen would be from renewable sources, and the biomass sourced from forestry and forest industry residuals.
Could supply up to 10% of domestic demand
Contributing to the choice of Långsele and Sollefteå for SkyFuelH2 are the municipality’s major growth ambitions, the area’s access to renewable electricity and suitable land areas, and the area’s long industrial heritage.

In operation, it is estimated that the facility could provide the equivalent of up to 10 percent of the Swedish domestic aviation’s annual fuel consumption with a sustainable alternative.
SkyFuelH2 would contribute to the creation of up to 100 direct jobs in Långsele and Sollefteå.
Next steps
With the LoI, work together with Sollefteå municipality begins to carry out more detailed technical feasibility studies.
Once these are completed, and assuming a positive outcome, the intention is to initiate a consultation process to meet residents, local businesses and associations, politicians, and relevant authorities.
After thorough investigations, consultation, and permitting processes, the construction of SkyFuelH2 could begin in 2024, with the first supplies of SAF to the aviation sector as early as 2026.
SkyFuelH2 is about the whole of Sweden living and living sustainably. Achieving our climate goals requires high ambitions and large investments. At Uniper, we look forward to working with Sasol ecoFT to be part of the sustainable aviation industry and the northern industrial revolution through the ambitions with SkyFuelH2, said Johan Svenningsson, CEO of Uniper Sweden.
