Finland-headed forest industry and energy technology provider Valmet Oyj has announced that it has been selected to deliver a steam turbine automation and control system to Energie AG’s waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Wels, Austria.

Energie AG is a multi-energy and utilities service group, that provides electricity, gas, heat, water, waste disposal, and information communication technology (ICT) services.

In Wels, the company is migrating the current turbine controls to the Valmet DNA automation system to have a fully integrated control system for the whole plant. This will also bring better visibility for the whole process, and easier and more efficient operations and troubleshooting.

Valmet’s automation system’s high reliability and proven availability combined with our experience with Valmet’s local Austrian team met our distinctive quality requirement and led to this order. In addition, Valmet’s long experience in automation and process technology paired with sustainability and reliability convinced us, said Günther Gruber, Power Plant Manager, at Energie AG.

Valmet’s delivery for the 23.5 MW steam turbine includes redundant Valmet DNA steam turbine control with a new turbine protection system and a new overspeed protection system.

The Valmet DNA Steam Turbine Automation system offers convenience together with the thoroughness of a fully integrated system. It is suitable to control steam turbines of any brand with any power output.

The delivery the value of which has not been disclosed will take place in April 2024 and the planned turbine start-up is scheduled for June 2024.

We have built an excellent relationship with Energie AG over the past 18 years by providing them with advanced automation solutions and a wide range of lifecycle services for their two waste incineration lines. With this second turbine running with Valmet’s automation solution, the customer will reach a maximum level of system integration and already known Valmet DNA advantages, said Mustafa Began, Service Area Manager of Automation at Valmet.
