The “Blockchain database for sustainable biofuels” project is jointly led by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and Bioledger Ltd and aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a blockchain-based database solution for the European sustainably-certified biofuels market, with an initial focus on the used cooking oil (UCO) biodiesel supply chain. It builds upon work conducted in 2017 and 2018 by RSB to explore blockchain’s potential for sustainability certification in the bioeconomy.

The Bioledger blockchain database is intended to meet the demand for a single European biofuels database as expressed by the European Commission (RED II 2018/2001 Art 28) and the European Biofuels Database Stakeholder Group, which gathered representatives of the European supply chain following fraud investigations relating to sustainably certified biodiesel throughout 2019.
In the project, RSB, Bioledger, and global data systems provider Oracle will engage stakeholders – including UCO collectors, biodiesel producers, traders, EU policymakers, industry associations, certification bodies, and auditors – to identify any weaknesses in current biofuels traceability systems following recent fraud investigations, provide input into the development of a blockchain database prototype, and review preferred database governance models.
The prototype blockchain database will be used to record all transfers of certified sustainable biofuel between collectors, producers, traders and consumers into the European RED/REDII regulated markets. The prototype will be tested with supply chain data volunteered by project partners Greenergy (UK), Olleco (UK), Van Wijk & Olthuis (NL), and Rexon Energy (SG).
In addition to testing the value of blockchain technology, the pilot project aims to analyse the preferred technical and governance specifications of all the interdependent stakeholders. RSB and Bioledger are currently conducting a survey of key stakeholders on a number of technical and governance specifications.
The project is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2020, with learnings publicly distributed on the partners’ platforms and via dedicated webinars in the third quarter of 2020. It is being funded by a grant from the ISEAL Alliance Innovations Fund, which is supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
