Kyushu Mirai Energy Corporation, a subsidiary of Japan-headed energy utility major Kyushu Electric Power Company Inc., has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shimonoseki City for a land lease contract for the proposed 74.9 MWe Shimonoseki Biomass Energy Co. Ltd project in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.

According to a statement, the recently established Shimonoseki Biomass Energy Co., Ltd is a biomass power plant joint venture between Kyushu Mirai Energy Corporation together with Kyuden Electric Industry Co., Ltd and West Japan Plant Industry Co., Ltd, the latter company that will build the plant.
The plan is to build a 74.9 MWe wood pellet-fired power plant in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture on the southwestern tip of the island of Honshu. Construction start of the plant is anticipated be in June 2019 with commercial operations estimated to begin in January 2022.
The plant, which is the largest domestic biomass power project to date for parent company Kyushu Electric Power, will require around 300 000 tonnes per annum of wood pellets.
