L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Ltd (LTHE), a wholly-owned subsidiary of India-headed engineering, construction, projects, manufacturing, and financial services conglomerate Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India's largest power utility National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC), to build a carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol plant at an NTPC power plant.
According to a statement, under the MoU, LTHE will be the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) partner to build a carbon dioxide (CO2) to methanol demonstration plant at an unnamed NTPC Power Station.
Furthermore, under this MoU, the duo will further collaborate to accelerate the development and subsequently commercialize CO2 to methanol plants.
Three-part demo plant
The MoU was signed on August 19, 2020, by Subramanian Sarma, Whole Time Director, and Senior EVP Energy and Sh. Ujjwal Kanti Bhattacharya, ED (Projects), NTPC Ltd. in presence of Sh. C K Mondol, Commercial Director of NTPC Ltd. and other senior officials from L&T and NTPC Ltd.

The demonstration plant will comprise of three sub-units – CO2 capture from the flue gas, hydrogen (H2) production by the electrolysis of water, and catalytic conversion of CO2 and H2 to methanol.
