In Japan, Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO), an international infrastructure and industrial engineering and construction company, has announced that it together with compatriot Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd (NSE) have been awarded an engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning contract for a 49.9 MWe biomass power plant. This plant will be built in Karatsu-shi, Saga for Karatsu Biomass Energy GK.

The TOYO and NSE joint venture will carry out the EPC contract on a full turn-key basis that includes engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning services for a power generation unit.
The dedicated biomass-fired power plant will use fuels such as wood pellets and palm kernel shells (PKS). Commercial operations are scheduled for 2024.
This power generation facility is a highly efficient biomass-fired plant based on the reheat system, whereby steam, after expansion through a high-pressure steam turbine, is sent back and reheated in the boiler, then resent to the low-pressure steam turbine for further expansion. This system realizes high power generation efficiency.
Since TOYO and NSE signed a comprehensive collaboration agreement in 2017, both companies have been collaborating in mutual support of engineering resources as wide a range as practical, including business initiatives that would be able to raise corporate value.
This is the second Joint Venture project awarded in the biomass-fired power plant sector, which is realized through competitive solutions that leverage the strengths of both companies and is the ninth biomass power project for TOYO with six 50 MW class, and two 75 MW class projects currently under construction.
For NSE this project is the fourth biomass power project following the 75 MW Kanda Biomass Power Plant, in Kanda, Fukuoka which started commercial operation in June 2021.
