Slovenia ranks as the thirteenth EU Member State in the 2025 edition of the European Bioenergy Day campaign, an annual initiative organized by Bioenergy Europe to highlight the growing importance of sustainable biomass in the energy mix of EU Member States.

November 12, 2025, marks Slovenia’s Bioenergy Day, a day earlier than in 2024, indicating that bioenergy could meet the country’s energy demands for 50 days or the remainder of the 2025 calendar year, based on Eurostat’s figures for 2024.

Bioenergy Europe’s annual campaign provides key facts on biomass and the bioenergy industry. It celebrates people, projects, and companies that contribute to achieving European carbon neutrality goals across transportation, industry, space heating, and power, while ensuring energy security.

Powered by Bioenergy Europe, the campaign is amplified by national and international partners who support the idea that bioenergy is more than just a renewable energy source—it is a reliable pathway to achieving Europe’s renewable energy transition.

In the case of Slovenia, which was also ranked thirteenth in 2024, renewable district heating plays a central role, as evidenced by the Loški Potok Wood Cooperative example in Loški Potok, a small municipality located in a remote mountainous region.

By connecting the entire value chain – from forest to district heat plant – the cooperative uses local forest residues and waste wood, keeping energy expenditure to within the community while reducing fossil carbon dioxide emissions.
