In the United States (US), Waga Energy Inc., a subsidiary of France-headed landfill gas (LFG) to renewable natural gas (RNG) technology provider Waga Energy SA, and Decatur Hills Landfill, part of the family-owned waste management group Best Way Disposal, have commissioned a new LFG-to-RNG production unit in Greensburg, Indiana.
Using Waga Energy’s patented “WAGABOX” technology, the facility upgrades landfill gas (LFG) into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas (RNG).
Designed to process up to 1,000 scfm of raw biogas, the unit can produce approximately 214,176 GJ of RNG annually.
The RNG produced on-site is injected directly into the local gas grid through a 3 km pipeline connection financed by Waga Energy and Decatur Hills Landfill.
For decades, our family has believed in operating our landfills responsibly and continually investing in better solutions. We are proud to partner with Waga Energy to transform landfill gas into a valuable renewable energy resource, creating lasting environmental benefits for the communities we serve, said Jessica Routley, CEO of Best Way Disposal.
By replacing fossil natural gas, the project is expected to avoid over 15,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions annually, according to estimates based on the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Landfill Gas Energy Benefits Calculator.
Decatur Hills is very excited to be part of this great clean energy project. It has taken a long time to find the right partner, and we think that Waga Energy has some unique solutions that will bring this resource from the landfill to the energy grid as a sustainable, renewable fuel, said Curt Publow, Environmental Compliance Manager.
The Decatur Hills facility is Waga Energy’s eighth RNG production unit in operation in the United States, marking a step in the company’s continued growth across North America.
We are proud to bring this new unit — our eighth in operation in the United States — online alongside Decatur Hills Landfill. Their commitment, rigor, and long-term vision made this project a success, and they have been an exemplary partner throughout. Thanks to this joint effort, the gas spontaneously produced by the Decatur Hills site, until now flared, will supply the local community with clean, local, and renewable energy, said Guénaël Prince, CEO of Waga Energy.
