In the United States (US), the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO)-funded Agile BioFoundry (ABF) consortium is overseeing a US$4 million Directed Funding Opportunity (DFO) for industry and academic partners to utilize ABF capabilities to accelerate innovation and adoption of new biomanufacturing approaches, as well as foster growth of the bioeconomy.
The DFO is an opportunity for industry partners to utilize ABF capabilities to develop novel microbial hosts and bioproducts, as well as to develop new capabilities and approaches that will advance all aspects of the Design-Build-Test-Learn biomanufacturing cycle.
A DFO funds competitively selected Cooperative Research and Development Agreements between laboratory consortia and partners from industry and academia. This DFO seeks proposals that leverage the unique, world-class capabilities of the US Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office’s ABF consortium and apply these capabilities toward addressing specific challenges identified by applicants from industry and academia.
Applications with strong justification for greenhouse gas reductions and other environmental benefits of a proposed product or system are of particular interest.
Up to US$4 million will be available. ABF anticipates a total of 4 to 8 projects will be selected, with a project duration of 1-2 years. Abstract submission and discussion with ABF lead investigators must take place by March 15, 2021, and applicants must submit their proposals by April 9, 2021.
