The US Department of Energy (DOE) released on December 14, 2020, its FY 2021 Phase I Release 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). Eligible small businesses can apply to receive up to US$200 000 to test their innovative ideas over 12 months. Small businesses that win SBIR/STTR awards keep the rights to any technology developed and are encouraged to commercialize the technology.

The DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is supporting 49 different SBIR/STTR research topics across its three technology sectors: transportation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. Details are found in the Topic Description Document and the Phase I Release 2 FOA.
Through this FOA, the Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) will advance its mission to help transform the nation’s renewable and abundant biomass resources into cost-competitive, high-performance biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower by soliciting applications focused on broadening participation.
The BETO topics include:
- Topic 10a: Small Business Bioenergy Technologies Increasing Community Partnerships;
- Topic 10b: Cultivating a More Competitive Bioeconomy through Strengthening Small Business Workforces;
- Topic 11a: Improving Plastics Compatibilization for More Efficient Recycling (in collaboration with the Advanced Manufacturing Office).
Small businesses interested in applying in response to this FOA must submit a Letter of Intent to be eligible to submit a full application. Letters of Intent are due no later than January 4, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
