Axis Technologies to build Latvia’s largest biomass plant

Lithuania-headed Axis Technologies, a company within the Axis Industries Group, has revealed that it has won the bid to build the largest biomass energy project in Latvia. Awarded by energy utility Rigas BioEnergija the EUR 30 million contract is for a 48 MW capacity biomass-fired district heating plant.

The two identical 20 MW biomass boiler plants in Riga will include installation of two flue gas condensing economizers with 4 MW capacity. In winter, the plant will be able to generate approximately one-sixth of the amount of heating supplied centrally to the district heating networks of the city part situated on the right shore of the River Daugava. During summer, this increases to nearly 80 percent of heating supplied (artist rendering courtesy Axis Technologies).

The project consists of two identical boiler plants in Riga, each unit consisting of a 20 MW biomass boiler with a 4 MW flue gas condensing economizer. The plants will be built in collaboration with the Latvian engineering and construction company Velve. Construction permitting is in progress and the companies expect to begin work in July.
