Biomethane reaches 91% share in expansive Swedish vehicle gas market

The proportion of biomethane in the Swedish vehicle gas mix continues to increase. New statistics from Statistics Sweden (SCB) show that the renewable share in 2018 is just over 91 percent. In addition, the total sales volume of vehicle gas increased by 1.6 GWh.

New statistics from Statistics Sweden (SCB) show that in 2018, the proportion of biomethane in vehicle grade gas reached just over 91 percent. In addition, the total sales volume of vehicle gas in Sweden increased by 1.6 GWh compared to 2017.

Statistics for 2018 released by Statistics Sweden on February 19, 2019, show that the proportion of biomethane in vehicle grade gas reached 91.3 percent. Furthermore, the previous trend of decreasing vehicle gas sales volume has been bucked. In 2018, 1.5 TWh of vehicle gas was sold which is 1.6 GWh more than the previous year.

Combined, the two metrics are welcome news for the Swedish Gas Association (Energigas Sverige).

The industry’s goal is that we should have 100 percent biogas in vehicle gas by 2030. The new figures show that we are nearing the target by leaps and bounds, and that is of course very gratifying. In this area, Sweden is the world leader. It is also great that total sales of vehicle gas has gone up in 2018. This bodes well for the future, commented Maria Malmkvist, CEO, Swedish Gas Association.

According to the Swedish Gas Association, there were 185 public vehicle gas filling stations along with about
60 non-public filling stations for closed fleets at the end of 2018.

Vehicle gas has been available in Sweden since the early 1990s. At first, it consisted solely of natural gas, but since the emergence of biogas production and, more recently imports, the share of biomethane has increased year on year. Since 2008, the share of biomethane in Swedish vehicle gas has been more than 50 percent and in 2018 it was 91 percent.

SCB figures on natural gas vehicle (NGV) registrations show that at the end of 2017, there were 55 117 gas-powered vehicles in Sweden. Of these, 2 533 were buses, 854 were heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) and the balance consisted of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Biogas is an important piece of the puzzle to meet the transport sector’s climate challenge. We believe in increased demand for gas cars, and thus for biogas, in the future. It is also fun to see so many positive signs for liquefied biogas, LBG. Among other things, with the project Drive LBG that we are the hosts for, said Maria Malmkvist.
