In Norway, Carbon Centric AS has announced that its carbon dioxide capture plant, which is sited at the Østfold Energi AS Rakkestad waste-to-energy (WtE) plant, is certified according to FSSC 22000 for the production of food-grade carbon dioxide, with Det Norske Veritas Group (DNV) independently verified purity above 99.99 percent.

The certification confirms that the facility, which entered commercial operations in September 2025 and was officially opened a month later, meets international food safety standards and is FSSC 22000 approved for the production of liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO2) used as a food ingredient.

In addition to the certification, our CO₂ has been independently tested by external laboratories. The results confirm exceptional quality, with purity exceeding 99.99 percent. This means we are now producing true food-grade CO₂ that meets strict beverage-grade specifications, with full traceability and safety, the statement said.

First-of-its-kind in Norway

The Rakkestad plant is Carbon Centric’s first full-scale facility – the first of its kind in Norway and among the very first worldwide.

With a capture capacity of around 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per annum, the plant is designed to handle the flue gas from Østfold Energi’s Rakkestad waste-to-energy plant at full scale.

Developed by Carbon Centric, the unit captures CO₂ from Østfold Energi’s waste-to-energy plant, cleans and liquefies it to LCO2, making it available as a recycled, FSSC 22000-certified food-grade raw material for a range of industries.

This is an important milestone for Carbon Centric and a strong validation of the work delivered by our team. We are extremely proud of the Food Safety team and the entire Carbon Centric organisation for their dedication and professionalism, the statement said.

One million tonnes target

Founded in 2021 by Fredrik Häger, Kenneth Juul, and Østfold Energi, with Vardar and Obligo joining as shareholders, Carbon Centric operates on a unique build-own-operate business model.

The company’s goal is to reach final investment decisions on projects with a combined annual CO₂ capture capacity of 1 million tonnes by 2030, and to establish itself as a leading European player in carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS).

The high quality of our CO₂ is also very promising for future storage applications and e-fuel production, where high-purity CO₂ is a critical requirement. The operational experience and robust quality systems established in Rakkestad will support our ambition to grow into a large-scale CO₂ player in the Nordics and beyond, the statement ended.
