In Sweden, biomass technology developers Cortus Energy AB has announced that it has produced the first ultra-pure synthetic gas on an industrial scale its the newly built biomass gasification plant in Höganäs.
Inaugurated in June 2108, the industrial-scale biomass gasification plant is built adjacent to Swedish metal powder and powder products manufacturer Höganäs AB. The first of its kind facility, the biomass gasification plant uses Cortus’s proprietary “WoodRoll” technology to produce green syngas to displace fossil gas currently used by Höganäs in its manufacturing process.
Cortus Energy has produced the first syngas at the plant in Höganäs. The product is identical to what was previously produced in the pilot plant in Köping, an ultra-pure syngas from biomass that fully meets the supply agreement with Höganäs AB.
According to Cortus, its lead in terms of the composition, properties, and quality of the syngas is now shown on an industrial scale and a major milestone for the company. The scaling up of the patented process and the gasification reactor and injector meet expectations so far.
The fact that we have now started production of ultra-pure synthetic gas from biomass on an industrial scale is not only a big step for us at Cortus, but also for the possibilities to replace fossil products with renewable products on a much wider scale, said Cortus founder Rolf Ljunggren.
The ultra-pure synthetic gas has been produced from biochar produced at the pilot plant in Köping from biomass fuel supplied by Södra. Södra is a supplier of biomass in Höganäs.
