Europe needs more renewable heating and cooling

European renewable energy trade bodies have issued a joint call to urge the Council to support the Commission’s proposal to set a yearly indicative target for Member States to increase their share of renewable energy in heating and cooling, article 23 in the Renewable Energy Directive II proposal.

Four of the trade body signatories in the joint call seen in a panel discussion on the decarbonisation of the heat sector during AEBIOM’s European Bioenergy Future conference held November 21-22 in Brussels, Belgium. From left Jean-Marc Jossart (AEBIOM), Thomas Nowak (EHPA), Pedro Dias (Solar Heat Europe) and Philippe Dumas (EGEC).

The seven organisations; Association of the European Heating Industry (EHI), Euroheat & Power, European Biomass Association (AEBIOM), European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), European Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE) and European Solar Thermal Industry Federation (Solar Heat Europe – ESTIF), represent between them the major industries active on the heat and cooling markets in Europe.

The signatories urge the Council to support the Commission’s proposal to set a yearly indicative target for Member States to increase their share of renewable energy in heating and cooling (art. 23 REDII) as ambition on renewable heating and cooling is “essential” for climate and energy security, for EU’s industrial leadership and will boost EU’s global competitiveness and the outcome of its other climate and environmental policies.
