Finland-heded Nordic energy company Gasum Oy has officially inaugurated its newest and largest biogas plant in the Swedish town of Götene. Construction of the plant started in 2023 and was finished on schedule in early 2025.

On an annual basis, the Götene plant takes in 400,000 tonnes of manure and other agricultural waste from neighboring farms and turns it into renewable energy as well as recycled fertilizers.

These renewable, recycled fertilizers are then returned to the farms in the area for reuse in agriculture.

The biogas is upgraded into biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), which is then liquefied.

On an annual basis, the plant will produce up to 120 gigawatt hours (GWh) of liquefied biomethane (bioLNG) per annum, making it one of Sweden’s largest bioLNG production facilities.

The facility will help Gasum’s customers in the transport and industry sectors reduce their carbon footprints by over 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) in total.

This milestone underscores our commitment to cleaner energy solutions and our dedication to helping our customers on their emission reduction journey. By transforming waste into valuable resources, we not only provide the transport and industry sectors with cleaner energy options but also contribute to the circular economy. Opening this plant represents another step towards a more sustainable future, and I would like to thank every Gasum employee and partner involved in the process for their hard work and determination along the way, said Mika Wiljanen, CEO of Gasum.

A threefold increase by 2027

The EUR 58 million facility represents a significant investment for Gasum and has in part been made possible by a EUR 15 million grant from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s “Klimatklivet” (Climate Step) investment program.

Gasum aims to increase its biogas production in the Nordics through strategic investments. The company’s next biogas plant is currently under construction in the Swedish town of Borlänge.

Gasum’s strategic goal is to provide its customers with 7 TWh of renewable gas, including biomethane, bioLNG, and e-methane, per annum by 2027. That’s approximately three times more than today and would reduce Gasum’s customers’ carbon footprints by 1.8 million tonnes in total.
