In Finland, energy and gas company Gasum Oy has opened a new gas filling station in Rauma serving both passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles with bioCNG, and bioLNG respectively.

Gasum’s newest gas filling station in the Finnish town of Rauma is open for business. The station provides both liquefied- and compressed gas, which means that passenger cars and heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) can be refueled at the station.

Like Gasum’s other filling stations in Finland, the Rauma station only sells biomethane, aka renewable natural gas (RNG), as fossil gas distribution at all Gasum filling stations in Finland ended in August 2024.

With the opening of the new station, Gasum will offer companies operating in the area the opportunity to switch to low-emission transports using biogas. Heavy-duty transport operators in particular have requested a gas filling station in Rauma, as it is an important logistics hub. The region has a busy port and a lot of industry, including forestry. The station also serves transport traffic along the Finnish west coast very well, as it is located near highway number eight, said Juho Kurra, Head of Business, Transport Finland, Gasum.

Reducing emissions from HDVs

Logistics and transport companies play an important role in reducing transport emissions, as emissions from heavy-duty transport account for approximately 40 percent of total transport emissions in Finland.

The emissions of a heavy-duty vehicle are many times higher than those of a passenger car because of higher fuel consumption and long distances driven.

By using biomethane, it is possible to reduce emissions from HDVs significantly and in a cost-effective way.

According to Gasum, the lifecycle emissions of biomethane are on average 90 percent lower than those of conventional fossil fuels, such as diesel.

Gasum’s goal is to offer 7 TWh per annum of renewable gas to its customers by 2027, including biomethane and e-methane, a quadrupling of current deliveries. Achieving this goal the company says would mean a combined carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction of 1.8 million tonnes annually for its customers.
