Norway-headed resource management and trading company Geminor AS has held a reopening ceremony of its processing facility in Landskrona, Sweden. The facility, which supplies fuel to municipal energy utility Landskrona Energi AB, is integral to maintaining the area’s fully fossil-free district heating system.

The reopening of Geminor Landskrona Hub follows extensive upgrades after a fire in 2019. The facility now boasts improved capacity and safety measures, making it more efficient at processing refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF), supplied to energy recovery plants across the Nordics.

A partnership with local value

The partnership between Geminor and Landskrona Energi delivers significant value to the local community. With 100 percent fossil-free district heating, residents benefit from affordable energy while contributing to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Kjetil Vikingstad, CEO of Geminor, emphasized that such partnerships are essential for achieving Europe’s sustainability goals.

Through this partnership, we demonstrate how effective and sustainable solutions can contribute to local and global environmental targets, Kjetil Vikingstad said.

High-quality fuel for fossil-free heating

Since 2012, Geminor has consistently supplied Landskrona Energi with around 30,000 tonnes of high-quality RDF annually, making it a trusted partner in the region’s transition to fossil-free energy.

In 2023, Landskrona Energi produced 245 GWh of district heating and 37 GWh of electricity, supplying homes and businesses across the region.

The plant is part of Landskrona Energi’s district heating network, which connects multiple cities and facilities.

Collaboration with regional energy providers like SYSAV in Malmö and Øresundskraft in Helsingborg ensures efficient energy distribution and sustainable use of resources.

Stefan Nyrud, Production Manager at Landskrona Energi, highlighted the critical importance of this fuel in both energy production and environmental impact.

Geminor’s fuel deliveries guarantee a reliable energy supply, allowing us to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly heating. The fuel quality is crucial for our operational efficiency, as we impose strict requirements on the RDF we receive—paper, wood, and plastic. Geminor has met these standards year after year, ensuring the fuel has the right composition and low moisture content to maintain high efficiency. This consistency has been key to reducing carbon emissions and achieving sustainability goals, said Stefan Nyrud.

Hub for clients across Europe

Strategically located with access to road, rail, and sea, the upgraded Landskrona Hub continues to store and treat secondary fuels such as RDF and SRF, essential for large energy-from-waste (EfW) plants.

The increased capacity helps divert more waste from landfills in countries
like the UK, Poland, and Italy, reducing carbon emissions.

Per Mernelius, Country Manager for Geminor Sweden noted that the improvements had positioned the facility to meet growing demand.

The upgrades at Landskrona allow us to deliver waste-to-energy solutions more effectively while maintaining high safety standards. This hub is now essential to serving clients across Europe, said Per Mernelius.

Significant potential for growth

As the demand for energy increases, Geminor and Landskrona Energi are exploring new technologies to improve fuel quality further and reduce their environmental footprint.

Landskrona Energi’s Stefan Nyrud sees significant potential for future growth.

We expect this cooperation to continue evolving, especially as we further explore fuel quality and logistics innovations to reduce our carbon footprint, Stefan Nyrud said.

With its upgraded facility and a proven track record of delivering consistent, high-quality fuel, Geminor remains a key player in supporting Sweden’s sustainable energy efforts and reducing emissions across the region.
