Finland-headed oil refiner and renewable products major Neste Oyj and KPI OceanConnect, a global provider of marine energy solutions, collaborate on the supply of Neste MY Renewable Diesel to the marine sector in Singapore in partnership with Global Energy Group for operational delivery in Singaporean waters.
Renewable diesel aka HVO100 is one solution for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in multiple sectors powered by diesel engines, such as heavy transportation, mining, and construction machinery.
Made from 100 percent renewable raw materials, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a direct replacement for fossil diesel, suitable for all diesel engines, and its use results in up to 90 percent reduced GHG emissions over its life cycle compared to fossil diesel.
It has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel, it is a drop-in solution that can be used in all diesel-powered vessels without additional investment or modifications to engines or fuel distribution infrastructure.
A first in Asia-Pacific for Neste
The delivery of renewable diesel from Neste, which operates a biorefinery in Singapore, was made at the Singapore Cruise Terminal, with the fuel sourced from Vopak Penjuru Terminal and transported to the cruise ship via the barge Maple (IMO Type II Bunker Tanker), operated by Global Energy.
Partnering with Neste and KPI OceanConnect to supply renewable diesel to the marine sector in Singapore is an important step in helping our clients reduce their environmental impact. By providing seamless and reliable delivery of renewable diesel with a Maple barge, we are supporting the industry’s transition without compromising operational efficiency. We’re proud to play a role in driving these crucial efforts within the maritime sector, said Chow Munee, Group Business Manager at Global Energy.
According to Neste, this is the first time the company supplies renewable diesel to marine sector players for use by cruise ships in Singapore.
This first supply of Neste MY Renewable Diesel to the marine sector in Asia-Pacific marks a significant milestone for the industry and demonstrates the versatility of the product across a wide range of applications where it can replace fossil diesel. It is an effective solution for enabling the marine sector to be more sustainable, said Ee Pin Lee, Head of Commercial APAC, Renewable Products at Neste.
Collaborative precedent
This collaboration sets an important precedent for the marine sector to utilize more sustainable alternatives in their operations.
The use of renewable diesel helps reduce the environmental impact in the marine sector but also showcases the feasibility of adopting more sustainable solutions seamlessly.
KPI OceanConnect facilitated the delivery of the renewable diesel, working closely with the vessel’s technical team to ensure engine compliance.
KPI OceanConnect collaborated with Neste to source the fuel and with Global Energy for operational agreements in Singaporean waters. This joint effort underscores the vital role of Neste, KPI OceanConnect, and Global Energy in advancing alternative fuels and meeting the maritime industry’s growing
We are proud to be industry first movers in sourcing and delivering renewable diesel to our clients, helping them reduce their carbon footprint and achieve their environmental goals. By working closely with Neste and Global Energy, we were able to offer a high-quality biofuel to our client, laying the groundwork for further fuel uptake and decarbonization progress. This successful delivery is a testament to how partnerships can help advance the industry’s green transition, said Jesper Sørensen, Head of Alternative Fuels and Carbon Markets at KPI OceanConnect.
