A project consortium with JGC Holdings Corporation (JGC HD), Revo International Inc. (Revo), Cosmo Oil Co., Ltd (Cosmo Oil), and JGC Japan Corporation (JGC) have recently announced that their joint proposal for “Establishment of a Supply Chain Model for Bio-jet Fuel Production from Domestic Used Cooking Oil” has been selected as a public call project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in Japan (image courtesy Cosmo Oil).

According to a joint statement, this NEDO project will focus on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production technology that can “technically realize” the envisioned scale of future production – a supply chain model for SAF production and supply to airports based on SAF production technology that could be commercialized in the future.

With the selection of the project by NEDO, the consortium expects to receive subsidies from NEDO towards the business study cost for the start of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production and supply, the cost of design and construction of SAF production facilities, the cost of demonstration operation, and utility supply, and the study cost of procurement of used cooking oil (UCO) as raw material.

In addition, Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Ltd., which has experience in the circular economy business (recycling business), will participate in this NEDO Project as a consignment business partner of JGC HD. The duo aims to develop and demonstrate a smart IT system for the collection of UCO.

The four-year project aims to have SAF production facilities up and running and to start supplying SAF by 2025.
