Neste and Telia cooperate to create smarter mobility

“There has been a lot of talk about the revolution in transportation, and it’s happening here and now. Our business customers have been waiting for new solutions that both reduce emissions and improve business efficiency. Through collaboration with Telia, we can offer an ever broader range of services to our customers,” said Mika Hyötyläinen, Vice President of Marketing for Marketing & Services business area at Neste.

A result of growing consumer needs and digitalization, is that the transportation of people and goods is undergoing unprecedentedly rapid change. At the same time, the logistics sector is increasingly faced with demands for reducing emissions.

Earlier this month the European Commission (EC) proposed legislation that would require carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from heavy traffic to be cut by 30 percent by 2030. With these needs in mind, Finland-headed oil refiner and renewable fuel producer Neste Oyj and telecom company Telia Finland, a subsidiary of Sweden-headed telecom major Telia, are joining forces to develop solutions for the logistics needs of their customers.

With new technologies and business models, we can jointly develop responsible solutions for many industries. The challenges with transportation are so great that strategic and deep-rooted cooperation between the various parties is needed to resolve them. Neste is a natural partner for us with regard the transport solutions of the future that we plan to be involved in, said Telia’s Head of IoT Sales, Kalle Mehtola.

Neste SmartTruck for smarter transportation

The first outcome of the cooperation between the two companies is the Neste SmartTruck service for heavy traffic. It allows companies to use a single interface to access numerous applications, including fuel consumption optimization, tachograph data transfer automation, and mobile refuelling for professional drivers.

According to Neste, the Neste app makes refuelling faster and safer, as no separate cards or cash is needed for payment. The service also includes GPS positioning, which helps with fleet management, planning, and the driving itself.

Neste SmartTruck has been designed as a platform of the future for new features and applications. It is the first common step towards new types of services. The digitalization of heavy traffic has just begun, with very real prospects for increased security and a great deal more. One very interesting development is a joint project of EEE Innovations, the Finnish Transport Agency, and Trafi for using heavy traffic to collect weather data and improve road safety, Hyötyläinen said.
