Northern Offshore Services takes delivery of world’s first biomethanol-powered CTV
The M/V Transporter is said to be the world's first 100% biomethanol-powered Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV). Seating 24 pax, the aluminium-hulled T-Class vessel features 100 m2 deck space for light cargo and N-O-S patented high-performance fender (photo courtesy N-O-S).

Sweden-headquartered Northern Offshore Services (N-O-S), a global leader in providing Crew Transfer Vessels (CTV) serving the offshore wind industry and part of marine industry major Northern Offshore Group (N-O-G), has announced the delivery of what it says is the world’s first 100 percent biomethanol-powered CTV.

N-O-S operates and manages a versatile fleet focusing on high-performing vessels, providing full service and flexible solutions.

The M/V Transporter, designed, developed, and provided by N-O-S, is a conversion from an A-Class to a T-Class vessel.

The CTV is a 25-meter, high-speed catamaran with an updated and improved hull design and 24 pax seating, specially designed for fast and reliable transfer of technicians and light cargo.

Collaboration with Vestas

The initiative is a collaboration with Danish global wind power industry major Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Vestas), which will charter Transporter to explore how the biomethanol-powered CTV can reduce carbon emissions from offshore service operations.

We now operate the world’s first single fuel biomethanol crew transfer vessel. We are improving our fleet’s sustainability and setting a new standard for the maritime industry. Biomethanol represents a powerful alternative to conventional fuels, and we are proud to lead the way. We are grateful to work with Vestas, a long-term customer, as they want to invest in the transition towards a more sustainable future. said David Kristensson, Group CEO of Northern Offshore Group.

The CTV is powered by biomethanol only, a clean, renewable fuel derived from sustainable biomass.

This innovative vessel is a part of N-O-S’s commitment to driving the transition to emission-reducing technologies and advancing the industry’s decarbonization efforts.

The biomethanol has been secured in advance through Northern Energy & Supply (N-E-S), another Northern Offshore Group (N-O-G) company.

We are leading the wind industry in testing solutions that move us away from using marine gas oil (MGO). Opportunities exist for operating low-emission vessels. Commitment and alliances are needed to further exploit these opportunities. We are proud to be the first company in the wind industry to test the use of a single-fuel biomethanol-powered CTV in our offshore service operations, said Lisa Ekstrand, Head and VP of Sustainability at Vestas.
