In Gävle, Sweden, Pyrocell AB, a joint venture company owned by Swedish wood industry major Setra Group and compatriot oil refiner and renewable fuels producer Preem AB, has taken delivery from the Netherlands of its biomass pyrolysis plant designed by BTG Bioliquids.
Designed by the Dutch biomass pyrolysis technology developer BTG BioLiquids, a subsidiary of BTG Biomass Technology Group BV and manufactured by TechnipFMC, Pyrocell’s new plant arrived by boat in Granudden on March 11, 2021, in the form of about 30 modules pre-manufactured in the Netherlands.
The assembly and installation of this first-of-its-kind facility in Sweden are now underway. The plant will convert residual sawdust from Setra’s Kastet sawmill into pyrolysis bio-oil that will then be refined into renewable diesel and petrol at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil.
The factory will stand on an area of about two hectares (ha) inside the Kastets industrial area in Gävle. Production is expected to start from September-October 2021, and at full capacity, the plant will produce around 25 000 tonnes of pyrolysis bio-oil annually
Now the next step in Pyrocell’s exciting journey takes place where we will produce a completely new product from the stump in the forest to the tank in the car. This type of investment in bio-oil is an important step in meeting the goal of fossil-free transport in Sweden by 2030, remarked Pontus Friberg, Chairman of Pyrocell.
In parallel with construction, staff recruitment for the new Pyrocell facility are underway.
