Sweden's largest transportation fuel producer and distributor, Preem AB has announced that production is now underway at its joint venture subsidiary Pyrocell AB's novel biomass pyrolysis plant in Gävle. Using pyrolysis technology, the pioneering plant converts sawdust into bio-oil which is then used as a bio-crude for processing into renewable fuels at Preem's Lysekil refinery.

Formed in 2018, Pyrocell, is jointly owned by compatriot wood products major Setra Group and Preem, and is based on the business concept of producing bio-oil from sawdust. Production at the first-of-its-kind pyrolysis plant in Sweden is now underway.
The commence of production at Pyrocell signals another concrete step in our transition and in our work to achieve large-scale renewable production, said Magnus Heimburg, CEO of Preem.
Pyrocell’s plant is located next to Setra Kastet sawmill in Gävle. There, sawdust, which is a residual product in Setra’s industrial process, is converted into non-fossil pyrolysis oil.
The pyrolysis oil, a bio-crude feedstock, is then refined into renewable diesel and gasoline at Preem’s Lysekil refinery.
Pyrocell is a unique industrial investment that enables a sustainable value chain from forest to tank. We are replacing fossil fuels and contributing to an increased proportion of renewables in fuels that result in lower carbon dioxide emissions, commented Pontus Friberg, acting Chairperson of Pyrocell.
On an annual basis, the plant will produce around 25 000 tonnes of non-fossil pyrolysis oil per year.
A Swedish first for Dutch technology
The milestone also marks a first for biomass pyrolysis technology developer the Netherlands-headed BTG-BTL – completion of its first pyrolysis plant in Sweden, and its second in the Nordics.
In December 2020, Green Fuel Nordic Oy (GFN) began bio-oil deliveries from its Lieksa pyrolysis plant in Finland to Savon Voima Joensuu district heating plant in Joensuu.
