Brazilian integrated sugarcane ethanol, sugar, and bioenergy major Raízen S.A. has announced that it has started operations of the new second-generation ethanol plant (E2G) at the Bonfim Bioenergy Park, in the city of Guariba, São Paulo (SP).

With a total investment of R$1.2 billion (≈ US233.27 million), it is the largest cellulosic ethanol plant in the world, with a contracted commercialization level of 80 percent of its nominal annual production capacity of 82 million litres.
Consequently, Raízen establishes itself as the largest global producer and the only producer operating two E2G plants on an industrial scale – Bonfim and Costa Pinto in Piracicaba respectively, both in the State of São Paulo – totaling a nominal annual capacity of 114 million litres.
In May 2022, the company disclosed that it would go ahead and invest in another two E2G facilities in the State of São Paulo (SP) – Barra Bioenergy Park and Univalem Bioenergy Park respectively – both of which are expected to come online during 2024 adding another 164 million litres of annual cellulosic ethanol capacity.
